Character Assignment

Character Team,

I apologize for posting this so late.  Good job on the silhouettes.  For those of you who did facial proportions as well, good job.  As you are aware, our last assignment was only focusing on big, medium, and small, not on features at all.  This was to give us an idea of how our characters would fit together and be interesting.  From what you posted, I took ideas that were similar and heading in the right direction, and I compiled them together.  The proportions aren't the same in all of them, but they're close enough.

For the girl, she'll be tall and skinny, with her legs being big (Tall but skinny), her head being medium, and her torso being small.  Her proportions are played up more in order to create more excitement, which fits her artistic nature.  We had mentioned earlier, that we wanted her to look slightly older than the boy, so notice how her nose and mouth are lowered in the last image.  Her head will be more of a sideways oval, rather than a circle, but we will keep her features soft and round.

For the boy, he will be short and stout.  His head and body will be relatively the same size, but different shapes.  His head will be a rectangle, and his body will be a square.  His legs will be short, but also skinny.  These proportions, I believe, help him seem more analytical.  The shapes also mirror those of the girl's, only being squared off, instead.  This helps tie the two to the same world, but keep them different.  His eyes will be far apart, with a small nose and large mouth.  Fell free to move his mouth a bit closer to his chin, too (in order to help him feel a bit younger).

Now that we have proportions nearly down, it's time to focus on features.  I told Kaili on Tuesday, that I wanted the girl to be white.  Focus on that, but if you have some killer other designs of different races, you may be able to change my mind.  Focus on the shape of the eyes, nose, and mouth.  What do their clothes look like?  Does the girl have eyelashes?  If so, how are they designed?  Does the boy have goggles?  Are they more like glasses?  Does he not have them at all?  What is their hair like?  How does that reflect their character?  These are all things to consider.

Work on some character sketches tonight, keeping close to the proportions I've attached below, but adding with the details.  Kaili has been doing a great job, already. We'll meet in the 2D lab at 11:00 tomorrow morning in order to draw some more versions.  After we get together and draw some more, you'll have until the end of the day on Saturday to finalize the designs you like best.  Then post them on the blog and I will refine them and bring finalized model sheets to club on Monday.

It's a lot to do in a short period of time, but it'll be great to be able to have them down so we can start moving forward and actually working on the animatic!

See you tomorrow!
